“Frightening or fascinating, cats populate our dream world. Symbols of duality, they are ambivalent by nature. We are drawn to them but also superstitiously fearful. It is the latter inclination that takes precedence in dreams. The cat that crosses our path guides us to a specific place.”

Khat’s bizarre bestiary purrs and pleases the eyes. A proliferation of images on speed.

Khat is originally from St. Etienne where he completed part of his studies at Beaux Arts. Then he came to Strasbourg. He began his career as a graphic artist first in an agency and then free-lance, but quickly veered toward illustration and painting, his first loves.

He uses a range of media and, naturally curious, he likes to try all sorts of techniques and locations to practice his art and keep it lively. His «home art» is inspired by urban art but in the end is meant to stay inside. The street, the outdoors and walls are different media, and they interest him too. According to Khat «the street is a free stage and accessible to everyone», giving «life» to his work through its circumstances and fleeting nature.

Khat’s work is evolving. «I’m working a lot with color and I’m learning not to use the line as much as I used to. For my paintings, I’m working more and more in layers: an image on top of an image on top of an image… I’m also learning to let go of the anecdotal and to make my figurative work more subtle and expressive, taking inspiration principally from flora and fauna (the cat is his totemic animal), monsters, biology, astronomy, and motifs from primitive, esoteric and shamanic art.
